MCIRCC WAS ON DISPLAY FOR THE UM & MILITARY COMMUNITY
MCIRCC’s military roots were on full display at the University of Michigan’s Regents’ & President’s Tailgate at the Crisler Center on Saturday, September 7. The tailgate preceded the Military Appreciation themed Army vs UM football game.
The Department of Defense has funded several innovative MCIRCC technologies, making it the ideal tailgate for MCIRCC to attend. The attendees were excited to see how close many of these innovative solutions are to saving lives on the battlefield.
Key UM visitors to the table included President Dr. Mark S. Schlissel, Board of Regents Paul W. Brown and Katherine E. White, Vice President for Government Relations Cynthia Wilbanks, and Interim Vice President for Research Dr. Rebecca Cunningham.
MCIRCC technologies featured included:

“Stop the Bleed” Tourniquets - highly effective, easy-to-use tourniquet for military and civilian use
Micro-Gas Chromatography Device - device uses exhaled breath to diagnose lung disease
Microvascular Tissue Oximetry - new optical method of measuring tissue oxygenation
Dynamic Respiratory Impedance Volume Evaluation(DRIVE) - effective, non-invasive blood volume analysis
Trans-Ocular Brain Impedance - non-invasive tool that measures changes in cerebral blood flow, determining if a secondary brain injury is manifesting
Gastroesophageal Resuscitative Occlusion of the Aorta (GROA) Balloon - non-invasive technique to obstruct the aorta, temporarily stopping internal hemorrhaging
MCIRCC Executive Director Dr. Kevin Ward was in attendance to give first-hand explanations of the devices, how they came to be, and show his own affinity for the armed forces as he is also a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Reserve Medical Corp. Additional MCIRCC team members in attendance included Dr. Hakam Tiba, Director of the Pre-Clinical Operative & Intensive Care Unit; Abdelrahman Awad, MD, MCIRCC Clinical Research Unit Clinical Subjects Coordinator; Raysha Simon and Kate Murphy, MCIRCC Marketing.
